The STA is an APPROVED RICS document which details the agreement, at high level, between the employer and
RICS. The employer agrees to undertake and follow RICS APC training process correctly and professionally as
detailed in RICS APC guides and in accordance with RICS Rules of Conduct.
The STA document need only be approved once, per employer, per faculty/pathway route, it then provides the employer with a structured pro forma template that can be amended (generally in appendix A to D) for each current and future candidate that the employer wishes to enrol into the APC process.
Every candidate enrolling on the APC/ATC from September 2002 must have an approved Structures Training Agreement (STA) written in conjunction with the RICS published STA Template (current version March 2008).
Gaining approval (step by step)
- Download the STA Word Template from the RICS website. Click here to download
(You can right click the link and ‘Save Target As’, saving the document onto your PC’s hard drive)
- PLEASE READ THE STA TEMPLATE CAREFULLY. Especially the portions in RED text which have been included as additional guidance. The red text should be deleted once the STA template has been completed for a specific employer.
- The counsellor (a Chartered Surveyor) must complete the STA template on behalf of the employer and then attend one of Jon Lever’s RTA Surgeries to discuss the APC process and the content of the STA.
Please bring a copy of your completed STA on a memory stick to the RTA Surgery.
RTA surgeries are spread out around the East an East Midlands region and are completely FREE. RTA Surgeries are approximately 2 hours long and are delivered on a group discussion basis a maximum of 10 attendees from a mixture of companies and APC pathways).
Please book online at www.delever.com in advance otherwise we cannot guarantee you will be able to be seen.
- The counsellor is advised to email the completed (draft) STA Word template to Jon Lever (jon@delever.com) prior to attending the RTA Surgery, so that Jon can have an opportunity to review the STA in advance. PLEASE DO NOT SEND THE STA TEMPLATE TO THE RICS.
- APC candidates are more than welcome to attend RTA surgeries but please ensure places are booked online in advance.
- At an RTA surgery Jon will provide comment and discuss with the counsellor any items that are missing from the STA or need further developments.
- Jon will require a written statement, via email, from the counsellor that they and their employer are committed to the APC process and that the employer fully understands the APC process and the STA document.
- On completion of the STA final draft, Jon will reassess any items discussed at the RTA Surgery and then if all is in order will approve the STA.
- Jon will issue his approval in writing, via email, to the counsellor stating the basis of the STA approval and Jon will also inform RICS that the STA has been approved.
- RICS will the publish the employer’s name in the approved employers list available to download at www.rics.org
The process is then complete until any further changes made by RICS warrants an update of the STA.
Please note:
If you have had your 2002 version of the STA approved it is NOT necessary to submit it for re-approval under the 2006 version of the APC guides. However, it may be advisable to update the STA document.
The changes in the 2006 version of the APC guides fall within the normal changes that the RICS would expect an employer to make for each individual candidate.
